Food Program
The Galiano Community Food Program works to build community and food security on our small island. We hold community potlucks, weekly Soup and Bread lunches and monthly Games Nights, plus organize Gleaning, Frozen Meals for Seniors, a Garlic Coop, Cheese Club, Workshops, School Garden Programs and much more.
Club Parks & Programs
The Galiano Club owns and maintains the South Community Hall, as well as over 830 acres of parkland on Galiano Island, British Columbia, Canada including Bluffs Park, Mount Galiano and the Community Forest. The Club runs the Community Food Program, is the home of the Galiano Players Theatre, hosts the Annual Blackberry Festival and Christmas Market. The Galiano Club was founded in 1924.
Community Hall
The Hall is a hub of the Galiano community and many of our local events are held there on an ongoing basis. It is also a favourite place for concerts, dances, weddings, plays, exhibitions, lectures, etc. The kitchen has convection ovens, industrial sinks, counters and cupboards and all manner of conveniences, and we’re quite proud of it.

FORAGING, by Martine Paulin
Foraging
On April 11, a small group of foraging enthusiasts had the pleasure of gathering for an afternoon of discussion centered on wild harvests. The instigators of this pleasant afternoon were Rose Longini, our gracious host, and Dan Persyko, a long-time Galiano resident, who has many years of experience feeding himself from the wilds and is very keen on passing on this valuable knowledge. Many of you will already know this colorful character as Dan the one-man band, a talented and versatile musician, or as T. Nile’s father…
While most of us have had some sort of exposure to eating wild foods, […]
FEEDING THE ISLAND FROM THE ISLAND
It is exciting to say that the first gathering of FARMERS AND GROWERS happened last week. Since the Conference on agriculture and food security last spring it has been apparent that opening up a conversation amongst growers could benefit us all.
Topics of interest included: Connecting people without land to available land; Labour, woofing, apprenticeship, subletting, cooperatives; Marketing local organic produce on island ; Cold Storage and processing facilities; Soil and Bylaws.
Another important issue on the table is whether Galiano should form a Farmer’s Institute. It would certainly give us a voice in […]

Where’s all the fruit?
As gleaning co-ordinator I have been eagerly awaiting fruit season all year. Memories of canning, juicing, saucing, freezing and drying floating through my mind as I gear up for all the hard work. But something is different this year. Very different.
Last year, word in the garden was “What a bumper year!”. This year its more like, “I’ll be lucky if I get one baskets’ worth”. The contrast is dramatic and will be felt island-wide. Already we are at least a few weeks behind last year’s ripening schedule and many folks have let the gleaning team know they will not have […]

Where do the Cookbook Quotes come from? for Food Forever
They are all from The Interviews!
The students at Galiano Community School were responsible for all but three of the interviews. Wreford Miller, who designed and set up this blog, came to Cathy Buttery’s class and taught an interview workshop in which students learned the techniques of writing and conducting interviews. The students then collaborated on a standard interview format, and recorded practise interviews with each other and with Elder, Margaret Edgar, who had volunteered to help out in the workshop.
Appointments were set up and each Elder came to the school to record […]
