Food Program
The Galiano Community Food Program works to build community and food security on our small island. We hold community potlucks, weekly Soup and Bread lunches and monthly Games Nights, plus organize Gleaning, Frozen Meals for Seniors, a Garlic Coop, Cheese Club, Workshops, School Garden Programs and much more.
Club Parks & Programs
The Galiano Club owns and maintains the South Community Hall, as well as over 830 acres of parkland on Galiano Island, British Columbia, Canada including Bluffs Park, Mount Galiano and the Community Forest. The Club runs the Community Food Program, is the home of the Galiano Players Theatre, hosts the Annual Blackberry Festival and Christmas Market. The Galiano Club was founded in 1924.
Community Hall
The Hall is a hub of the Galiano community and many of our local events are held there on an ongoing basis. It is also a favourite place for concerts, dances, weddings, plays, exhibitions, lectures, etc. The kitchen has convection ovens, industrial sinks, counters and cupboards and all manner of conveniences, and we’re quite proud of it.

Introduction to Cheesemaking – June 16th
Join cheesemaker David Asher Rotsztain as we explore the fascinating realm of cheese. David will demonstrate and explain the techniques for making three basic styles of cheese: paneer, yogourt cheese and camembert, an aged rennet cheese. These lessons will provide a solid foundation for those interested in making cheese at home, or anyone who wants to know how their cheese is made.
The workshop will emphasize a ‘natural cheesemaking’, with a focus on simple, DIY methods that are well suited to the home kitchen. David will also discuss the topics of raw milk, […]
Galiano Farm Experience by Alison Colwell
Cable Bay Farm and Sunshine Farm are partnering up with the Food Program again this year to grow food for the community, the workers and the farms.
Last year we led regular work parties up to the farms, and those will happen again this year (though not as frequently – call or email to get on the list!) But this year the farms have added a work trade. One day of labour a month gets you an irrigated bed.
I tend to spend my time in the kitchen, where creating the feeling of community […]
The Galiano Food Program’s Farm Experience! by Thomas Schnare
Before we all become ‘squirrel-cage-busy’ with the spring time explosion of activity down on the farm (by the time you read this it will, in all probability, be in full swing!) it’s best to reflect on last year….what happened, how it worked and then, where are we going this year?
First of all, last year’s farm experience is best remembered through the June 2011 Active Page article (pg 38) written by Roger and Lisa Pettit. Do you remember last spring? Maybe it’s best not to! Just forget about the whole darn spring that […]
Galiano Greenhouse/Seed Starting Group – March 2012
The seed starting group got off to a solid start on March 4th with our first plantings of the season. Initial attendance went from 7 participants to a total of ten participants by the end of the month. At March’s first meeting, seed starting soil and soilless mixes, their components and purposes were discussed. The agreed upon recipe was made up in a large enough batch for everyone to plant their seeds. The initial planting included parsely, celery, fennel, onions of various types and leeks.
At the next meeting planting included peppers, eggplants, […]
Breadmaking Workshop at School
Over two days at the end of April – the students in each class will be making their own loaves of bread – from scratch.
Last year the bread-workshop for the Primary class was a huge success – the kids thrilled to have made their very own bread.
Red Wriggler Day at School
On April 5th, The Food Program will be helping the children at the Galiano Community School bring together all that Red Wiggler Worms love to eat and sleep on.
Singing the song ‘We Have a Worm Farm’ will help them to remember that ‘they don’t like dairy and they won’t eat meat’….. Lovely bin donated by Heather will let kids peak in to check on the health of the critters as well as size up the castings for the garden to feed plants.
Bringing it full circle will be garlic toast made with the […]
