Policy:
Galiano Club Directors, employees and volunteers are expected to adhere to the following code of conduct.

Code of Conduct

General
1. All individuals will be treated with dignity and respect.
2. Galiano Club directors, employees and volunteers are to work together as a team to support the objectives of the organization.
3. All communication, oral, written or electronic must be appropriate and respectful.
4. Discrimination on the basis of any identified category under the BC Human Rights Code is prohibited.
5. Participants, volunteers and employees have a right to privacy. While the Galiano Club does not collect personal information from participants, any personal information of which a Galiano Club director, employee or volunteer becomes aware must be treated as confidential.
6. Proselytizing personal beliefs is not acceptable nor is taking advantage of any relationship or association to further personal, religious, political or business interests.
7. Any uncertainty over a course of action, dangerous situation, known or suspected illegal, unethical or otherwise wrongful action, including, but not limited to incidents of fraud, waste, abuse, theft, corruption, bribery or any violation of the Galiano Club’s Ethical Declaration, Code of Conduct, Confidentiality policy or Conflict of Interest policy will be reported to a supervisor, or in the case of Directors, to the Chair of the Board.
8. Conflicts of interest, potential conflicts of interest or other circumstances which could interfere with impartial judgement will be reported to a supervisor (staff and volunteers) or the Board of Directors (directors).

Meetings:
To ensure effective and efficient meetings, meeting participants will:

  • adequately prepare for meetings
  • be on time for meetings
  • regularly attend meetings and inform the chair of necessary absences
  • respect the agenda and stay on topic
  • respect other’s values and interests
  • seek a better understanding of other perspectives with an open mind
  • avoid accusatory language, rude behavior or stereotyping
  • listen to what others have to say without interrupting
  • make room for all to have input in the time available by stating your perspective as concisely and briefly as possible

Procedures:
1. If the Code of Conduct or Ethical Declaration are breached by a volunteer, the supervisor will make a determination of the appropriate action. Such actions may include warning, reprimand, suspension or dismissal.
2. If the Code of Conduct or Ethical Declaration are breached by an employee, the supervisor, or in the case of the Executive Director, the Governance Committee, will make a determination of the appropriate action, in line with the Galiano Club’s human resources policies and procedures.
3. If the Code of Conduct or Ethical Declaration is breached by a Board member, the Governance Committee shall decide what action will be taken.
4. If the issue cannot be resolved or a request to step down from the Board
5. If a member of the Executive is potentially at fault, other members of the Executive in concert with the Governance Committee shall decide on the action to be taken.
