When you were a child how did you get your food?
She didn't have stores, they had cows. Milking cows and meat cows. They had chickens. They went hunting, looking for deer and grouse. Her dad, when he got home, right away he guts the deer, and the offering to her mother is the liver. That was the prime part of the deer.They made it hot. They always had flower and sugar.
When you were young how did you keep your food ?
Her mom kept butter, milk and eggs in the pantry that was cold. They had no refrigeration, so they had a root cellar. They had apples and all the vegetables all winter, and fresh meat canned. A lot didn't can fish or meat.
How was getting your food different when you were a kid ?
No shopping, no stores. They fished and they hunted, getting getting food in the forest. Now she goes to the store, but they never went to the store when she was a kid. She never saw a can of soup.
What is your favorite local food?
Her favorite local food is her home grown apples. Her favorite food in the spring is nettles.
Tell me about a food memory you have from childhood.
Her favorite food memory when she was a child is her mom's home made bread. It was a really big treat for her and her mom would save some of the bread dough and fry it in bacon fat.
What seasonal foods do you eat?
Summer, she eats out of her garden - lettuce, tomatoes. Apples - fall is wonderful 'cause there are apples, pears and plums. Winter she freezes some of her food. Lots of pickles and jellies, vegetables. Over winter buys bananas and things you can't grow here.
How do you over winter your food ?
Over winter she uses her root cellar like onions, potatoes, carrots. A root cellar is a cool, dark room. Her grand parents had a root cellar. She was scared of it. Her grandma used to ask her go get a potato and she would be in and out of there so fast.
How and where do you shop for your food ?
Now she shops locally here. If she needs something bulk she buys her meat in Victoria. Mostly she buys her food here, mostly Galiano, sometimes Victoria. She does support the local as well.

there is no recipe.(But she will provide one. She has many favourite recipes).
how did obtaining food change for you when you moved to Galiano ?
She grew up on Galiano so she already had a vegetable chart. She moved off Galiano for a bit. She moved off Galiano when she was 12 and she moved back in 2001 she still farms and uses her root cellar.
What foods make you think of spring and why?
Nettles make her think of spring because they are a spring tonic. And kale makes her think of spring and she has a craving for them, usually and nettles.
What foods make you think of summer and why?
Plums - because you can't get plums to taste the same ever.They're so ripe in the summer.
What foods mcek you think of fall and why?
Corn is always a late summer - fall thing and beans as well.
What foods make you think of winter and why?
Squash. The squashes and potatoes, all the root veggies in the winter. She puts them in her root cellar and they last for months. It's her favorite winter vegetables.

Jersey cow was there ,milking cow. They would get rock cod, salmon, They ate oysters, claims, but also fish for dinner, fish for lunch and fish for breakfast.
They never smoked salmon. They held a contest. She guessed 50 pounds was how much the salmon weighed, and she won!
